Save the Date – November 13, 2018 at 7 pm – Second Science of Prevention Speaker

Following the positive reception to researcher Dr. Stephen Dewey last spring, NCUFY worked to identify other speakers to bring to our community to share their research with parents, faculty and students. A standout in that search was Dr. Amelia Arria, the Director of the Center on Young Adult Health and Development and the Office of Planning and Evaluation at the University of Maryland School of Public Health and we are pleased to share that she will be visiting our community on November 13 and 14.

Dr. Arria’s research focuses on health-risk behaviors among college students, her current area of interest is understanding how substance use and untreated mental health issues can interfere with academic achievement and what can be done to promote student success.  Dr. Arria will be sharing her research with Horace Greeley science and health students and others who are interested in learning about her work in a series of small group presentations and drop in sessions.

NCUFY is also pleased to bring the opportunity to hear Dr. Arria speak to parents and other community members on November 13, 2018 at 7 pm.  Dr. Arria’s community presentation will focus on the impact of substance use, particularly marijuana, on academic performance. Recent studies show that marijuana use may have a greater impact on the teenage brain than other substances including alcohol.
