This year 4/20 falls on a Friday and is a half day in the Chappaqua Central School District. By now most parents know of the association of 4/20 with the pot smoking culture and many parents understand why today’s marijuana is not the same as the weed of the 1980s. But by the time they reach 11th and 12th grade, most teens perceive the risk presented by marijuana use as low and believe that parental disapproval of marijuana use is less than that for alcohol and other drugs. Take advantage of the upcoming “marijuana holiday” to talk with your teens about marijuana. For tips on how to have an open ended and successful conversation, read the New York Times blog post “Talking With Teenagers About Marijuana”.
