NCUFY is a community based coalition whose goal is to bring sectors of the New Castle/Chappaqua community together to work to ensure the health and safety of our teens. Two of our Coalition members have joined together in a message to parents and the community about safety considerations during this celebratory time of year. We are pleased to be able to share their collaborative effort and join in wishing all families, particularly those with graduates, a happy and safe end of school year and summer.
End of the School Year Safety Message
from the New Castle Police Department and
Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps
The end of the school year is an exciting time, with high school students celebrating by attending proms, graduation parties and events to kick off the beginning of summer vacation. The New Castle Police and Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps want to help you keep your kids safe, and remind you that now is a great opportunity for families to have important conversations around safe celebrating and safe teen driving.
Review and discuss with your child your family’s rules about underage drinking, car use and any restrictions associated with your child’s driver’s license. Consider your family’s curfew and be aware that inexperienced juniors are often asked to be the designated drivers for seniors celebrating the graduation season.
Because New Castle first responders take our children’s safety seriously, both the police and ambulance corps increase staffing during the graduation season.
Talk to your child about how he or she should behave if they encounter the police. Please communicate that it is especially unsafe to attempt to evade the police by trying to run or drive away from them, which can end in physical injury. Also encourage your child to call 911 if a friend is in danger from drugs, alcohol, or anything else; it is important to remember that safety should always come first.
Congratulations to our graduates and their families, we wish you all happy and safe celebrations,
Chief Ferry, New Castle Police Department
Captain Peter Marcon, Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps
