On Wednesday, February 16, the Chappaqua Central School District celebrated Unity Day, envisioned, sponsored and organized by the Horace Greeley High School’s BIPOC Student Union. These students created a day full of inspirational speakers, presenters, and workshops for their peers at the middle and high schools.
As noted by the CCSD, Unity Day was a day to learn and grow together, and a way to create a community where everyone feels supported, affirmed, and welcome. This year, New Castle United for Youth has sponsored several community activities around the theme “Community Connection is Prevention”. These included community weaves at Community Day and the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival, as a way for community members to work together to create a visual representation of the beauty of community connections. We were thrilled when the Horace Greeley SADD Club asked for our help to bring a community weave to Greeley as one of their contributions to the Unity Day activities.
Feeling connected to your school and being part of your school community is good for students’ physical and mental well being. SADD’s Unity Day Weave gave the Greeley community the opportunity to come together to create a work of art illustrating the beauty and strength created by community connections. We think the resulting tapestry is amazing and hope the activity created opportunities for students to feel personally connected and to make new connections within their school community.
