The holiday season and start of a new year can be a fun and exciting time, but it can also be a stressful time with new pressures. For some people, the question “What’s your new year’s resolution?” can bring up unpleasant feelings. NCUFY is here to help you reframe how you think about resolutions, how to stay on top of your goals for the year, and how to feel accomplished as the year progresses!
We know that everyone thinks differently about new year’s resolutions. This guide was created by NCUFY Youth Coalition members to provide both advice for healthy resolution making and some project ideas to get you started!
This easy-to-follow five step approach will help you make and maintain healthy resolutions!
It’s much easier to see your end result when you have a clear idea of what you’re working towards and how you are going to get there. Set certain days that you want to accomplish a part of your goal by!
Visualize your goal and compose your thoughts into statements and pictures! Hang it up somewhere you pass by frequently to help remind you of the lifestyle you want to achieve.
For each day, week, or month, write out the things you need to accomplish to get closer to fulfilling your New Year’s Resolution. You’ll have the feeling of satisfaction every time you check off a box and you’ll be able to track your progress.
Be kind to yourself! It’s not always going to work the first time around, and that’s okay! You can always try again. Think about changing up some of your action steps to reach a better outcome. Small steps are still steps, so do what you can, when you can.
Whether it’s getting a favorite treat, watching your favorite movie, or doing an activity you love, reward yourself to keep your mind motivated and exciting to keep making progress!
