Come see the Mega-Lungs at Greeley Homecoming festivities on Friday night or at Saturday’s Community Day.

The Mega-Lungs are here! A 12-foot tall inflatable set of lungs for you to walk through and learn about lung anatomy and why healthy lungs are important. Join NCUFY at Horace Greeley for pre-game homecoming festivities on Friday September 14th from 6-7 pm or at the Chappaqua Train Station for Community Day on Saturday September 15th from 10 am to 3 pm. We’ll have fun healthy lung-related giveaways and activities and an opportunity to learn more about our community Coalition.

Second Summer of NCUFY Youth Work Yields Great Results

Twenty five New Castle teens spent a portion of their summers working with New Castle United for Youth – twenty two as youth summer interns and three attending a weekend Youth to Youth student leadership conference.

Under the leadership of social worker Olivia Wilkins and school counselor Kevin Nugent, our interns worked on a wide range of projects and engaged with a variety of Coalition members.

End of School Year Safety Message from New Castle Police Department and Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps

NCUFY is a community based coalition whose goal is to bring sectors of the New Castle/Chappaqua community together to work to ensure the health and safety of our teens.  Two of our Coalition members have joined together in a message to parents and the community about safety considerations during this celebratory time of year. 13 Reasons Why – Resources for Parents

When the Netflix series dramatization of Jay Asher’s teen novel 13 Reasons Why became a tv sensation, many parents struggled with how to help their teens process the difficult topics covered by the series. With the release of 13 Reasons Why – Season 2 on May 18, 2018, teens are again confronted with a popular show that dramatizes issues including teen suicide, sexual assault, mental health, substance abuse, school violence, bullying and more.  

Following the popularity of the original series and in anticipation of the sequel, SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education) brought together a group of 75 leading experts in mental health, suicide prevention and education as well as healthcare professionals to develop tools to help encourage positive responses to the series.

NCUFY Summer Opportunities

New Castle United for Youth, a federally funded community-based youth prevention coalition, is looking for high school students who want to take advantage of a great short term summer opportunity to learn leadership skills and help their community. New Castle teens who will be in high school next year are invited to apply to participate in the NCUFY summer internship. NCUFY works to reduce substance use in our community through collaboration, education, positive messaging and supporting substance free activities. Rising 9th and 10th graders are invited to apply to represent NCUFY at the Youth to Youth Eastern States Conference this July.

4/20 – A Good Opportunity to Talk With Your Teens About Marijuana

This year 4/20 falls on a Friday and is a half day in the Chappaqua Central School District. By now most parents know of the association of 4/20 with the pot smoking culture and many parents understand why today’s marijuana is not the same as the weed of the 1980s. But by the time they reach 11th and 12th grade, most teens perceive the risk presented by marijuana use as low and  believe that parental disapproval of marijuana use is less than that for alcohol and other drugs. Take advantage of the upcoming “marijuana holiday” to talk with your teens about marijuana.

Dr. Stephen Dewey Presents the Science of Drugs, Addictions and the Brain

On Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 7:30 pm, Dr. Stephen Dewey will join New Castle United for Youth in the iLab at Horace Greeley high school to help parents understand the science behind the impacts of alcohol and other drugs on the adolescent brain. Dr. Dewey, a neuroscientist and researcher at NYU Medical School, has spent years studying the impacts of drugs of abuse on the brain.

Dr. Dewey will also be at Horace Greeley High School on Friday, April 27 to discuss his research with students in certain science classes. Students are welcome to attend the evening presentation if they are not scheduled to meet with Dr. Dewey with their class.

See Things Clearly – Teens, Substances and Driving

New Castle United for Youth is looking forward to the Horace Greeley PTA’s Safe Driver Event on Tuesday, February 13th at 7 pm in the Horace Greeley Auditorium. The event features speakers Jacy Good and Steve Johnson and others from the community who will help parents to navigate the process of fostering a safe driver. NCUFY will be in the auditorium lobby with Coalition information and an ice scraper give away. Vaping, Juuling and E-Cigarettes Presentation

Thank you to our wonderful presenters and the more than 75 parents who came out to learn more about vaping and the health of our youth. Attendees heard from Horace Greeley High School Principal Robert Rhodes, Dr. Richard Stumacher of Northern Westchester Hospital, Town of New Castle Supervisor Robert Greenstein and Student Assistance Counselor Carolyn D’Agostino about why we should be concerned about teens vaping and what is being done in our schools and town to combat the problem.
