Parent Support from NCUFY for Red Ribbon Week 2021
This week (October 23-31, 2021) is Red Ribbon Week! Red Ribbon Week raises awareness about substance abuse and the importance of making safe, informed choices. Red Ribbon Week is a great time for parents to talk to your kids about the importance of making safe, informed choices when it comes to alcohol and other drugs. In honor of Red Ribbon Week, NCUFY has arranged for a one month license for Chappaqua parents to watch the film, which includes access to the excellent parent discussion guide.
We’re Funded!
We’re excited to announce that New Castle United for Youth will continue to receive federal funding for our coalition work to prevent and reduce youth substance use and to support the well-being of New Castle youth! NCUFY was one of 54 coalitions nationwide to successfully apply for a competing continuation Drug-Free Communities grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy and Centers for Disease Control. Announced by an ONDCP press release on September 21, this grant will provide NCUFY with $125,000 of funding annually for the next five years.
Our successful grant application means that NCUFY can continue to build upon the good work done during Years 1 through 5 of our funding.
It’s a Weave!
Community Day 2021 was an amazing event! It was wonderful to see so many local organizations participating and so many community members enjoying themselves and learning more about all our community has to offer.
We were thrilled so many people visited us at our Community Day booth and helped us to create our visual representation of the importance of community connections. Our tally of participants included many sectors of our community – youth, parents, schools, faith, local businesses, civic and volunteer organizations, police and many other town workers and officials. The unofficial (we’re sure we missed some!) list – Community Sectors Represented by Community Weave – shows that more than 40 different groups are represented in our tapestry.
Community Day 2021 – Community Weave
New Castle United for Youth is bringing an interactive Community Weave project to Community Day 2021! We hope you’ll join us on September 18 for our Community Weave to help create a visual representation of all the different facets of our community and the strength of our shared connections.
Senior Experience and Around the World Basketball Tournament
The end of the school year is always a busy time in our community and NCUFY youth were no exception this year. Our three Greeley Senior Experience interns wrapped up a busy five weeks of internship work. They spent a bunch of time helping to prepare for this summer’s internship program, helping to package last summer’s work for the website and creating other material to help raise awareness of the Coalition and its work. Interested in learning more about NCUFY and what it’s like to do Senior Experience with the Coalition? Their final project Flipgrid presentation can be seen on our website.
Our Senior Experience interns also played a role in the first ever Around the World Basketball tournament for middle schoolers, jointly sponsored by NCUFY and the New Castle Recreation Department.
Congrats Grads!
Congratulations to the Class of 2021! The end of the school year and graduation season are great times for safe celebrations! New Castle’s First Responders have again joined together to help keep our community safe this spring. Read the 2021 End of the School Year Safety Message from the New Castle Police Department, Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Chappaqua and Millwood Fire Departments for more information. New Castle United for Youth is proud to support the efforts of these Coalition and community members. For some tips
Summer Opportunities 2021!
We’re looking for summer interns! Are you a high school student who wants to learn leadership skills, help your community, and collaborate on interesting projects with other teens? Apply to work with us this summer! New Castle United for Youth is a community-based youth prevention coalition that works to reduce substance use in our community through collaboration, education, positive messaging and supporting substance free activities. In past years, NCUFY summer interns have learned about public health and substance abuse prevention and applied that knowledge to projects like working with Northern Westchester Hospital on vaping messaging, planning fun substance free activities for teens and activities to encourage family connections.
If They Had Known – An Important Event for Parents and Teens About Xanax and Benzodiazepines
#Xanax has been trending on Twitter and TikTok. Do you know the dangers of benzodiazepine misuse? More importantly, do your children? Join New Castle United for Youth and Greeley Student Assistance Counselor Carolyn D’Agostino to watch the short film “If They Had Known” and have a brief discussion on the topic. Bring your teen. Family connection and conversation are the most important way to help your child make good choices, including ones that can save their life or that of a friend or acquaintances.
The event will be on Zoom on Monday, April 12 at 7 pm. Preregistration is required.
NCUFY Family Cookbook
As the school year continues, we want to highlight some of the amazing work that our Summer 2020 NCUFY Interns accomplished this year! During Session 1, the interns focused on family connections. Recognizing that cooking and meal times are a great opportunity to strengthen family bonds, they decided to create a cookbook to encourage community members to work together to make delicious meals as a family.
